Rotary encoder failes after activation

I can't understand what's going on.
Got my kit, soldered it, it work's fine. A bit later the rotary encoder stopped working. After a bunch of reading, measuring, de- and resoldering and more reading I found this activation step.
Got my activation code entered it and then the encoder stopped working completely.
Maybe anyone has a clue.
