callibration problems 15001k

Hi, just built the 15001k oscilloscope kit, checked all the voltages and all were perfect, however, when I try to callibrate there is no trace that resembles a square wave just a (fuzzy line) which does change slightly when I adjust the caps.
when I built the kit i tested all the components with a tester and all were good except, on testing the 1pf capacitor, my tester returned (damaged or unknown part) I assumed that 1pf may have been out of its measurement range....... I would be very greatfull for any input / help cheers
