DSO138mini works, but cannot change settings

I get a nice square wave with both the built-in source and an external signal generator and a nice sine wave with the external generator. The waveform data all seems to be correct.
Most of the switches and switch combinations do what they are meant to do, except I cannot change the time base (locked at 1ms) or any other parameters with the + and - switches.
What does the oscilloscope mode switch do? It seems to do nothing.
