D@O 068 Schmitt Trigger and ADC questions

I have a questions regarding how the circuit works and I am having trouble parsing the code:
What is the function of the Schmitt trigger? I assume that the pulse created by the schmitt trigger from the input helps establish the frequency for the frequency meter and the automatic trigger. Is this so?
