Right after boot up, the LCD screen looks weird (see picture below). I can see some reaction to button presses, and sometimes it is even readable. I checked all connecions between LCD and main board and resoldered them, but that didn't help. I measured all voltages as per the assembly guide, and found nothing wrong. I noticed that the distance betwen the LCD boeard and the main board is very small (just a few millimeters), and as a precaution I ground all soldering blobs with a dremel to make them as flat as possible. It is very difficult to inspect whether there is a short or not, but I'm prety sure there isn't one.

Can you post photos of the board (both sides) please? Connection is the major cause for this issue. Please also check the solder joints at the pre-soldered MCU.

You were absolutely right about checking the MCU. There was a blob of solder shorting the connectors of the Atmega. You can see it clearly in the last two pictures. I removed the blob, but that did not change anything, unfortunately. I hope I didn't ruin anything
