Ah, ok! So, I can connect the grounded side of R20 to the nearby GND pad/hole, then. That should be easier than connecting R20 to the positive pin on C28.

Excellent, thank you for the suggestion. Just to confirm, the ground pin of R20 is going to be the side that measures (almost) zero resistance to the groundplane, using a VOM, right? The other side of R20 measures 10K to ground, which is the value of the resistor. And on C28, the ground pin is going...

The 20x1 SIP for the LCD (ASSY1) should be installed on the PCB before Q2 and C17. Q2 and C17 are seriously in the way of soldering the three right-most pins of the SIP. Do ASSY 2 and ASSY 3 need to make electrical connections between the LCD and the PCB, or are they there just to provide mechanical support to the LCD?

One of the pins in ASSY 2 came out of the plastic body. Do I need to reinsert it to make an electrical connection?
